Healthy Snack Franchise: A Winning Franchise for 2022
When you’re craving a snack what do you reach for? If you say something healthy, you’re part of a growing trend. The global healthy snacks market is expected to reach $98 billion by 2025. Among the popular items–nuts, seeds, trail mixes, fruits and vegetables. Snacking is quite common, with research showing 91 percent of Americans eat one or more snacks every day. Couple this with the fact that we are living busier, more active lives, and the demand is growing for healthy snacks on the go. Which means if you are hungry for a good business opportunity, a healthy snack franchise may satisfy your appetite for success.
For so long, snacks on the go included chips, cookies, candy and chocolate. Although these treats are delicious, medical experts agree that eating junk food on a regular basis can lead to an increased risk of obesity and chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and some cancers. The high levels of fat, sugar and sodium are a recipe for a bad diet.
Although tempting treats are all around us, more Americans are on the look-out for healthy foods. So if you are searching for a profitable snack franchise, you may want to cross the cookie franchise, the candy store franchise and the chocolate franchise off the list as consumer demand is showing a trend toward nutrition. More people are focused on health and wellness than ever before, perhaps a trend accelerated by the global Covid-19 pandemic.
Snacking can be an important part of your daily diet. Eating nutritious foods at regular intervals is a healthy way to get energy, maintain weight and be heart healthy. When you wait more than three hours before you eat, your bodies’ sugar levels can spike. Eating healthy snacks on the go decreases hunger and keeps us from overeating at meal time.
A snack is considered healthy if it provides vitamins, is low in fat and added sugars and is low in sodium. An added bonus is that it includes necessary nutrients to fuel the body. Healthy snacks give a feeling of being full and satisfied.
Healthy Snack Trends in 2022
Health-conscious consumers understand that snacks are great pre-workout, post-work-out or as a meal replacement. Something substantive and nutritious gives the body what it craves and needs. But consumers who are making healthy food choices are not just those hitting the gym every day. Health and wellness is on the minds of a majority of Americans and healthy eating is simply part of an overall healthy lifestyle.
That overall need for well-being is ushering nutritious eating habits from this year into 2022. Nutrition experts are predicting some interesting trends in the new year. For example, expect to see demand increase for healthy snacking to include protein, plant-based, nutrient rich, immunity-building, and hand-held options. Plus, consumers will continue to stay the course about food sourcing; knowing where their food comes from and how it was acquired.
According to Eating Well magazine, we will see a movement toward, “Reducetarianism.” This is for consumers who aren’t ready to go totally vegetarian or vegan, but still want to reduce their consumption of meat, dairy and eggs to help the planet and their health.
Dieticians say we will see a need to provide more “functional drinks” in the coming year. Drinks that are convenient to hold but are filled with nutrients.
Based on information from Whole Foods, we may see a new food flavor; a citrus fruit about the size of a tangerine called Yuzu. It’s mainly cultivated in Japan, Korea, and China but now being grown in parts of the U.S. While the sour fruit will likely not be eaten by itself, it may be used in drinks. It is a rich source of vitamin C, and has been used for centuries in the treatment and prevention of colds and sore throats. It’s reported to be an anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory, and its aroma has relaxing properties.
Forecasts for the future also show that Americans are shifting from thinking about long lifespan to focusing on “healthspan” or the years of life we are healthy and free of disease. That means in 2022 we will focus not only on how long we can live, but also on how healthy we can live those years. Snacking will not be obsolete, but instead we are shifting to what’s called, “sensible indulgences.”
